Overview
Consorzio per la Tutela del Formaggio Grana Padano was founded in 1954 and today encompasses more than 200 Grana Padano producers, maturers and retailers. Its work was rewarded on 30th October 1955 with D.P.R. no. 1269, a law which recognised Grana Padano as a Denominazione di Origine cheese (Designation of Origin). In 1957, a ministerial decree appointed Consorzio per la Tutela del Formaggio Grana Padano to the supervision of Grana Padano production, as well as to the promotion of its cheese both in Italy and abroad.
The generous and enthusiastic work of Consorzio per la Tutela del Formaggio Grana Padano in protecting and promoting Grana Padano was rewarded in 1996, when the European Union made it a Denominazione di Origine Protetta (D.O.P.) cheese.
By virtue of this prestigious acknowledgement, today Grana Padano is one of the hallowed products whose origin and production methods are safeguarded by a set of guarantees within each of the European Unions member states in order to protect consumers.
With this new status, Consorzio per la Tutela del Formaggio Grana Padano appointed C.S.Q.A. S.r.l (Certificazione Qualità Agroalimentare Certification of Food Quality), which is based in Thiene, to carry out the necessary controls, under the authorisation of the Ministry for Agriculture and Forestry Policies. These checks ensure compliance with the conditions established by the Production Disciplinary so that the product is entitled to be branded with the designation Grana Padano and the diamond-shape marks that certify it as a D.O.P. cheese.
