What does D.O.P. mean?
This EEC food regulation has two levels of protection: Denominazione di Origine Protetta (D.O.P.) (Protected Designation of Origin) and Indicazione Geografica Protetta (I.G.P.) (Protected Geographical Indication).
The aim of these trademarks is to protect products and producers from imitations and unfair competition. However, they are also an important guarantee for consumers, who are able to distinguish between different products and choose what to eat with peace of mind.
The Paduan Plain was recognized as the production area of Grana Padano in 1955, and the cheese itself was awarded the D.O.P. in 1996 due to its typical characteristics and history. Its properties have never been in doubt in that Grana Padano is the product of the tradition, land and climate of a very specific area. Furthermore, Grana Padano is produced in accordance with a set of precise quality standards that govern its raw materials and processing methods.
