Foundation of the Consorzio
On 10 April 1954, the Ministry of Agriculture passed Law no. 125, which established standards for the protection of Designations of Origin and types of cheeses, including "Grana Padano".
On 18th June 1954, Federlatte (Federazione Latterie Cooperative – Federation of Dairy Co-operatives) and Assolane (Associazione Industrie Lattiero-Casearie – Milk and Cheese Industries Association) founded Consorzio per la Tutela del Formaggio Grana Padano, which pooled all the producers, maturers, and retailers of Grana Padano.
On 30th October 1955, the President of the Republic passed Decree no. 1269 in "Recognition of the designations regarding the processing methods, product characteristics and production areas of cheeses", which included Grana Padano. Two ministerial decrees, on 23rd March 1957 and 17th June 1957 respectively, appointed Consorzio per la Tutela del Formaggio Grana Padano and Consorzio per la Tutela del Formaggio Parmigiano-Reggiano to oversee the production and trade of their respective cheeses.
Since then, Consorzio per la Tutela del Formaggio Grana Padano has been the official protector and overseer of all production in the area stipulated by law. Protection involves constant and comprehensive monitoring of the dairies and ripening storehouses and the use of co-operative trademarks by a team of experts which selects the cheeses and marks only those that comply with the specific characteristics established by law (D.P.R. no. 1269 of 30/10/1955). Consorzio per la Tutela del Formaggio Grana Padano also takes any steps, including judicial action, which may be required to combat misuse and irregularities.
Today, Grana Padano is a D.O.P. cheese, in accordance with EEC Regulation no. 1107/96. |
